CR Strategy

Companies need a clear strategy for CR that supports and is consistent with the business strategy. Otherwise it is likely that CR activity will be unplanned, uncoordinated and unrelated to key business challenges and opportunities.

We help our clients develop strategies that provide a clear framework for CR activity. The development process has four broad steps:

• Step 1 Identification - We work with our clients to identify and focus on key issues. We produce the list of issues by consulting internal and external stakeholders and scanning media and pressure groups for relevant concerns (see Stakeholder engagement)
• Step 2 Integration - We help clients to integrate their CR strategy with their core business strategy. Areas of alignment and misalignment between business and CR objectives are identified and discussed with management. It is essential that any conflicting priorities between the business objectives and CR objectives are reconciled. A number of companies have been criticised for inconsistent messages between their CR reports and other company publications, such as annual reports or public affairs literature.
• Step 3 Positioning – A good strategy provides clarity about the company’s aims. We help clients decide on what is appropriate. This may range from leadership to compliance and may be set at different levels of ambition for different issues. Broad timescales for achieving strategic milestones are included.
• Step 4 Drafting – We help our clients draft the strategy and assist with internal circulation and amendments. The style and length depends on company culture and preference. Normally we advise that a strategy contains less detail than an ‘implementation plan’ but more detail than a ‘policy statement’. Including information such as who is responsible for different initiatives and how they are to be funded is desirable. We can arrange for a draft strategy to be reviewed by external opinion leaders.

In the future, CR may be so embedded in company culture that operational divisions automatically factor CR issues into their core strategy planning. But, most companies would benefit from developing a CR strategy and reviewing and updating it regularly.

We also develop CR communications strategies for our clients. See Other Communications for details.
